Characterization of molecular alterations associated with disease plays a role in medicine that is almost as foundational as the use of the microscope.  Infectious diseases are diagnosed on the basis of molecular testing, and cancer treatment depends upon molecular test results.  Pharmacologists use molecular testing to understand the basis of adverse drug reactions, while pharmaceutical companies use knowledge of molecular alterations in disease to design strategies for drug discovery.  There is little doubt that the age of molecular medicine has arrived.

In spite of the strides that have been made, we are still on a voyage of discovery - a voyage as significant as that of Darwin’s expedition on the Beagle.  Though the use of molecular diagnostics and targeted therapy has improved life for some patients, for most conditions the promise of delivering genetically and environmentally customized treatments is still a dream.  Disciplined discovery, clinical validation and routine implementation of molecular medicine on a broad scale will take the creativity and labor of thousands, accelerated by the exchange of ideas and data among individuals committed to making the dream a reality.  Not only will medicine need a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease, but also more reliable and inexpensive diagnostics, information support systems that make data interpretable to a wide range of clinicians, and health care delivery models that are capable of making these advances available not only in the tertiary academic medical center, but also to the remote practitioner, or even those for whom trained professionals are hundreds of miles away.

The Association for Molecular Pathology is an active and rapidly growing group of professionals who are working together to make these dreams a reality.  We are physicians, scientists, laboratory technicians, informaticists and others committed to exchanging ideas and information, and working together to develop and use molecular diagnostics to improve medical care throughout the world.  We show our commitment through research, quality improvement and development of practice guidelines.  We share our commitment and knowledge through educational programs for experts and novices, publications such as the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics, and advocacy both for patient rights and for a practice environment that advances medical care.
