A Tribute to Our MembersThis is the last Newsletter message I will write as President of AMP. While there are several more months left to my term, it seems appropriate to share at least one of the lessons I have learned while entrusted with this role. This proved to be difficult, since I learned so much during the year, and because the learning experiences were so diverse, ranging from Association management, to regulatory affairs, reimbursement issues and new developments in the science of molecular diagnostics. Indeed, I have often felt as if I were drinking from a fire hose. Mary Steele Williams Appointed as Executive Director of the Association for Molecular Pathology

AMP Meritorious Service Award RecipientsIt is my great pleasure to announce the first winners of the AMP Meritorious Service: Teresita Cuyegkeng Redondo and Marlene Sabbath-Solitare. Terry and Marlene are receiving this Award in recognition of their dedicated, decade-long service as co-editors of the AMP Newsletter. (For details of the Award see Nominating Committee Report). Newsletter Editor is often a thankless task and involves corralling AMP leadership and encouraging them (aka haranguing them) to deliver Newsletter articles in a timely fashion several times a year. Once all of the articles are in, the work actually begins as the articles need to be edited, corrected, and the overall layout determined. Over the last year, they have moved the Newsletter into a pure electronic format, helping move AMP into the digital age. In addition, they are the semi-official photographers at the Annual Meeting and instituted the Annual Photo Contest. >>Read the Article |

Carlo M. Croce, MD is being honored for his contributions involving the genes and genetic mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of human cancer. During the course of his career, he discovered the juxtaposition of the human immunoglobulin genes to the MYC oncogene and the deregulation of MYC in Burkitt lymphoma, the ALL1/MLL gene involved in acute leukemias, the TCL1 gene associated with T-cell leukemias, and cloned, named and characterized many oncogenes including the BCL2 gene involved in follicular lymphoma as well as several tumor suppressor genes. He uncovered the early events involved in the pathogenesis of lung, nasopharyngeal, head and neck, esophageal, gastrointestinal and breast cancers. 
On June 30, 2011, AMP appointed Mary Steele Williams, MNA, MT(ASCP)SM to the position of Executive Director. This move is indicative of the tremendous growth experienced by this 17 year-old Association. The outgoing Executive Officer, Mark E.
Sobel, MD, PhD, a founding member and past President, served for ten years as AMP’s part time Executive Officer and steered it to its current prominence as the voice of molecular pathology.
